After several months of teasing, Netflix has placed online this Friday, February 15, the first season of the Umbrella Academy, series a fantastic and super-heroic including Ellen Page, and Robert Sheehan. But how is it different from the other ? While the hegemony of Marvel to the cinema is undeniable and unwavering, on tv the kind of super-heroic tends to diversify. If the House of Ideas and DC Comics are generally in the ranking of the best series, programs of a new kind are emerging more and more : these adaptations of comics are trying everything in order to stand out from the sometimes too classic or formatted Agents of SHIELD and other Arrow and The Flash. One thinks in particular of the recent Preacher (for his side trash) and Legion (taken from the universe the X-Men and totally WTF). We also expect the same thing from two series that begin on the same day : Doom Patrol, the spin-off of Titans DC side and the Umbrella Academy, next to Netflix. The latter is adapted from comics written by Gerard Way (the leader of the group My Chemical Romance) between 2007 and 2008. The Umbrella Academy follows a dysfunctional family whose members have super-powers have all been collected by a billionaire industrialist. At his death, the six remaining members find themselves and discover that the Apocalypse threatens the planet. And it is in the singularity of these characters that the series is Netflix stands out : “Even if Umbrella Academy has a coating of a series of super-hero, it is above all a family drama. Their powers are just one more. I would not say that they are useless but it is not focused on that,” explained his showrunner Steve Blackman. Who are the heroes in The Umbrella Academy ? Evoluent in the world of the Umbrella Academy six main characters atypical to powers and sometimes special : Luther has the body of a gorilla, Allison can control anyone if she starts her sentence with “I heard a rumor”, Number 5 is an old in a body of young and Diego is an old person who stutters who has learned to handle knives. The character played by Robert Sheehan, Klaus, brings a quirky side to the series : “Despite his eccentricity, Klaus is a character grounded in the real. It looks like many artists in the music community who drink and use drugs. And it is this dependence, plus the fact that he has a fear of his abilities, which lessens its power.” says Mary J. Blige, the interpreter of the badass Cha Cha. Also, Umbrella Academy would not be what it is without its duo of killers from the future Hazel and Cha Cha. The first (played by Cameron Britton, chilling Ed Kemper of Mindhunter) has an obsession for donuts and the second one has no sense of morality. With their look at the Men In Black and their colourful masks, created a mismatch interesting between their personality and their mission (kill # 5). Christos Kalohoridis/Netflix Well that Umbrella Academy is a series of super-hero, she has not really the essence. It looks the same on the genre, through flashbacks to the time in which the six protagonists were young children, and that they were One of the magazines proudly wearing their mask and costume. Two decades later, the members of the family measure finally the weight of their powers and the time is in the hangover : “The series is based on the premise that having powers is not always funny, or fun. Alison, for example, can control the people. This eventually the torturing.” says Cameron Britton. Thus, when the book of Revelation the tip of its nose, these “super-heroes”, does not have the first instinct to save the world. Quite to the contrary. If in its form, the series Netflix remains quite wise, and classical (it is not too trashy or visually searched), it relies entirely on the uniqueness of these characters. Remains to be seen if the audience will come to identify with them.
